To Win At Liverpool Is Amazing - Simao
All the talk might be of Fernando Torres returning to face his former club this evening, but for Simao it is purely a return to, as he calls it, 'a special stadium.'
The Portuguese international scored for Benfica back in the 2005-06 Champions League as they knocked Liverpool out of the competition - and he says that winning at Anfield is something else.
"I already know what it is like to win at Anfield and it is amazing," he opined to AS today.
"I have very good memories of that qualifying round. We had a magnificent match that we won 2-0 to knock Liverpool out. It was a great night for Benfica and for myself.
"It is a special stadium, everyone knows the magic about Anfield, but above all we want to win. It would be a very important victory for Atlético as it would practically put us in the quarter-finals. We are having a great competition and we want to continue."
Certainly victory tonight would all but assure their qualification and even a draw would be a good result for the away side who currently have two wins and one draw to their name.
Things could have been so different for Simao, though. As he acknowledges, he could well have been playing for the home side this evening rather than the Spaniards.
"A lot was spoken about me playing in England but in the end nothing came of it," he mused.
"That has passed though and now I am with Atlético, who are also a large club and who I want to achieve big things with."
If Atlético are to get anything from Anfield this evening they will have to be at their best and Simao knows that they will have to take their chances when they come.
"The victory in the league against Mallorca has come at a good time because we needed to win again. Now the Champions League comes and we want to have another good game," he declared.
"It will be complicated but we must play football. Liverpool will press and want to win in front of their fans but we will have chances to score and the match will definitely be a good spectacle."
