Konami Reveals PES2008
After the debacle that was Pro Evolution Soccer 6 on the Xbox 360 (please, let's not go there again, the memory still haunts me) Konami has returned to either put right those wrongs or to further rub our faces in the faeces by announcing the new version, aptly titled Pro Evolution Soccer 2008.
PES2008 apparently features a 'revolutionary' new adaptive artifical intelligence system called Teamvision which supposedly means CPU opponents will learn new ways to play against you. Building new attacks to counter repetitive patterns of play, or capitalising on repeated defensive errors as it learns your style and routines.
Set pieces are also apparently improved with full control being given to the number of players in, and the position of, defensive walls, as well as adding a wide range of attacking set piece options.
The extensive Edit Mode of old will also make a return allowing those of you with a hell of a lot more patience than me to create proper teams with proper names and proper kits to then sell on eBay for ridiculous sums of money.
PES2008 will also mark the series' first appearance on the PlayStation3 and will also be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation2, PSP, PC-DVD and Nintendo DS.
"We have taken a long hard look at what has made the Pro Evolution Soccer series so popular, and where we want to take it next," commented Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka, creator of the series and Producer of PES 2008. "With the new Teamvision AI system, we truly believe that we have elevated the game to a new level. The movement of players off the ball, coupled with the total control given to the player, creates the closest simulation of real football to date. We really hope everyone enjoys our evolution. I promise it will be worth the wait."
There's no word yet as to whether or not Seabass has fixed any of the previous dodgy PES staples such as the naff throw in mechanic, the notorious lag that dogged the 360 version, the complete waste of time that the through ball has now become, the inability of Thierry Henry or Michael Owen to run past Paulo Maldini (now in his 50s), the poor commentary and overall presentation of the game and the set-in-the-past 8 way digital controls.
Come on Seabass, you've taken the piss for the past two years with sloppy incremental updates, it's now time to deliver a perfect 50 yard cross field pass and convince the doubters (of which there are many now, and I include myself in that list) that PES is the better game. With EA making massive recent strides with the release of its recent and actually very good UEFA Champions League 2006/2007 game, if you don't deliver the goods this season your recent domination at the top of the league will surely be overtaken by Chelski, I mean EA.
